چکیده

In this article, a review on bioactive flavonoids that are abundant in medicinal and functional food (dietary) plants has been made, with special reference to antimalarial flavonoid molecules. Flavonoids have been found to exist in plants/plant medicines with a wide structural diversity consisting of numerous polyphenolic compounds and having well defined molecular target specificity. These phytoconstituents may serve as important natural lead molecules for their development as potent antimalarial therapeutic agents.

An overview of chemotherapeutic targets for antimalarial drug discovery.

The need for new antimalarials comes from the widespread resistance to those in current use. New antimalarial targets are required to allow the discovery of chemically diverse, effective drugs. The search for such new targets and new drug chemotypes will likely be helped by the advent of functional genomics and structure-based drug design. After validation of the putative targets as those capab...

Cryptolepine and development of new antimalarial agents

Natural product-derived drugs exemplified by quinine, isolated from South American Cinchona species and artemisinin discovered in China are of immense importance for the treatment of malaria. Although malaria parasites resistant to artemisinin have not yet been found in malaria patients, the need for new antimalarial agents remains. The burden of malaria is heaviest in Africa where over a milli...

Antimicrobial peptides: a new class of antimalarial drugs?

A range of antimicrobial peptides (AMP) exhibit activity on malaria parasites, Plasmodium spp., in their blood or mosquito stages, or both. These peptides include a diverse array of both natural and synthetic molecules varying greatly in size, charge, hydrophobicity, and secondary structure features. Along with an overview of relevant literature reports regarding AMP that display antiplasmodial...

Novel Small Molecules against Two Binding Sites of Wnt2 Protein as potential Drug Candidates for Colorectal Cancer: A Structure Based Virtual Screening Approach

Wnts are the major ligands responsible for activating Wnt signaling pathway through binding to Frizzled proteins (Fzd) as the receptors. Among these ligands, Wnt2 plays the main role in the tumorigenesis of several human cancers especially colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, it can be considered as a potential drug target. The aim of this study was to identify potential drug candidates ...
